COMM 100 What I Learned: Tyler Christensen 2-27-14

Grad Plan:

I learned that the Grad Plan is something that will help lighten the load of college.  It gives students a guideline to follow.  It’s never a sure plan, but it helps to know there’s a plan.  No student should be left in the dark not knowing what they’re doing.  Another thing I learned from Brother Christensen is that internships are something of great value. An internship is something that should be taken on the spot.  No one should ever turn down an internship because they’re not being paid for it.  If anything employers will see how willing you are to work for free that they’ll more likely consider you for a job.  It gives students the upper hand in job hunting.  Plus internships are a great way to network.  Network, network, network; it’s obviously very important for a communication major.

COMM 100 What I Learned: Beth Hendricks 2-20-14

Advertising!

This is the field I will be going into.  Her speech made me 100% sure I chose the right emphasis.  She talked mainly on marketing and how to spot the target audience.  She made it perfectly clear that without advertising everything else would be in trouble.  Advertising helps lower the cost of products.  If Advertising can’t work well with other emphasises such as, Public Relations, there won’t be much success.  It helps to know some of the things that make Advertising an important job and not just an annoying one.

COMM 100 What I Learned: Michael Cannon 1-13-14

“Change your words, change your world.” – Michael Cannon

One important thing he touched on…

R esearch

A ction

C ommunication

E valuation

Public Relations and Advertising are extremely important.  They both need to get along with each other in order to make acceptable work.  He made great points about what words can do.  If said right words could change the world.  It’s the difference between making millions and making pennies.  I learned a lot about how important writing really is in Communication.  This will help me in the field I’m going in.  It gives me the base of Advertising.  If I can write well, then I can do marvelous things.  Michael Cannon’s words of wisdom made me see that all fields are important.  One can’t be without the other.

COMM 100 What I Learned: Caryn Esplin 1/30/14

“Market Yourself!”

Caryn Esplin is such an energetic woman.  She really taught me a lot about standing out amongst the talent.  She made such a great reference to ESV (Efficient, Skilled, Versatile).  I thought she gave everyone great advice that will stick with us forever.  She not only talked about being creative and marketing oneself; but also praying for the right path.  The only way a person will go down a path of happiness is if they go to Heavenly Father and ask for guidance.  I loved her ability to communicate with the students.  She really taught me what it’s about to be able to do a job right.

Website Analysis: Microsoft Office / March 27

download

I already have Microsoft downloaded onto my computer, so I don’t really need to use this website too often.  On the other hand, it has some templates that would be nice to have. If I need to type up a resume then there’s a template waiting for me. Powerpoint, Excel, and Publisher are also available.  It’s a great website to have for a just incase scenario.  I might use this for a resume cover.

This is a website that basically gives students the information needed for their career path.  I might use the Academic Discovery Center tab more than any other.  It has some great resources to use and it has some information on how to go about getting a degree.  Like it says on the homepage, it’s the college of business and communication.

Am I good at math? No! That’s why I’m a Comm major!

This website is brilliant.  It has time zones, a calculator, timers, and even games.  I love it.  If I’m going to be in the Communications business then this is important information to know.  If I write something for a different state or country then I’ll need to know their time zones.  It only makes sense that I’d need this in my career.  I might even use this right now, just for fun.  I like the apps that are available and the games are kind of neat as well.  I think I might make myself comfortable here.

The grad plan.  What more is there to be said.  It’s a nightmare to use but once done it’s a heaven sent.  When everything is put in place it gives a great guideline for the student to follow.  At this school only a certain amount of credits are accepted.  This helps the student maintain on track.  It also gives the student an idea of when they will graduate and all of the steps he or she needs to take to get there.  It really is a nice thing to have, especially when you’re a freshman.  It’s a pain in the neck to do, but it’s definitely worth it.  With a grad plan I now know how my future will look.  I’ll have all of my classes down and know what I need for my major.

Website Analysis: AAF / February 20

Online Advertising

The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is a program that protects and creates advertisements.  This is great for me since I’m going into advertising.  This website presents awards for advertisements.  It gives people information on how to do their jobs correctly and also helps with the understanding of the job.  It has some tabs for technology.  It gives information on what the trends are and how to incorporate that into advertising.  This is a fantastic tool to use for my career path.  Sometimes it can be daunting with all of the competition around, but at least this website has some tips and tricks on how to succeed.  It sounds like something every job needs.

This just may be one of the most important websites available.  It has scholarship opportunities, internships, scholastic events, and much more.  There’s nothing more valuable than experience.  This website is the gateway to having a successful career.  Everything on this site is valuable.  Not only can it be used by college students, but also by those who have none.  It’s a great way to understand and obtain career goals.  It has many internships to choose from.  There are so many things right with this website that it makes me feel a little giddy inside.  It’s nice to know there are plenty of options out there.  This website will surely help with my degree.  When it comes time to have an internship I know where to go first.
